ARTICLE 5: YEAR-ROUND SCHOOL

5.1       Initial Site Level Track Assignments

 

5.1.1       The site administrator will meet with the faculty to present the educational program needs of the school, tracks, grade levels, and subject areas.

 

5.1.2       Once the educational needs of the school have been presented, the following process will be utilized for determining the assignment of a site teacher to a track:

 

a.      Teachers will meet by grade level or department and attempt to mutually agree to their individual track assignments, within a reasonable time frame specified by the site administrator.

 

b.      If mutual agreement cannot be reached and more persons have requested a track than can be assigned, the following criteria shall be applied by the site administrator before making a final recommendation or placement to the Superintendent/designee:

 

K-5 Schools:

-- Training in special program(s) relevant to the track

 

6-8 and 9-12 Schools:

-- Training in special program(s) relevant to the track

-- Credential(s)

-- Major(s)/Minor(s)

-- Recent experience in subject area

 

c.      District seniority shall be considered if all the above factors are judged to be equal.  (See Article 3.1.5.)

 

d.      Final determination as to who receives the track shall be made by the Superintendent/designee.

 

5.2       Track Changes Same Site

 

5.2.1       K-5 and K-8 Schools

 

a.      When a vacancy on a track exists and more than one (1) teacher at that grade level where a vacancy exists has requested the position, teachers will meet by grade level to mutually agree on assignments.  If mutual agreement cannot be reached, the teacher with the greatest seniority will be assigned the position.

 

b.      If only one (1) teacher wants a change of track, that teacher shall receive the assignment.

 

c.      Teachers assigned a multi-graded class with students at the grade level where the vacancy exists may participate in this process.

 

5.2.2       6-8 and 9-12 Schools

 

a.      When a vacancy on a track exists and more than one (1) teacher has requested the position, the teachers will meet by department or grade level and attempt to mutually agree to track assignments.

 

b.      If mutual agreement cannot be reached, the site administrator will make the assignment/reassignment after considering the following criteria:

 

-           Training in special program(s) relevant to the track

-           Credential(s)

-           Major(s)/Minor(s)

-           Recent experience in subject area

 

c.      District seniority shall be considered if all the above factors are judged to be equal.  (See Article 3.1.5.)

 

5.3       Intercession Teaching (defined as “Additional Instruction Time During OFF Track Period”)

 

5.3.1       A unit member may teach during his/her assigned intercession, off-track period or summer recess.

 

5.3.2       For those teaching an enrichment, extension or remediation course for students on intercession or off track, compensation shall be at an hourly rate commensurate with Article 25 - Summer School. The length of the intersession day will be the same as the length of day in summer school.

 

5.4       Rotating Assignments/Roving Assignments

 

Plans for the teachers/classroom movement of tracks’ closing will be developed locally in accordance with school plans, and ratified by the Governing Board when necessary.

 

5.4.1       Rotating Assignments

 

A teacher who is required to change or share classrooms from one (1) track to the next track shall be provided:

 

a.      Movable, lockable storage space.

 

b.      Assistance in moving materials to any new on-site work location.

 

c.      A minimum day at the end of each track to permit the taking down of classroom materials.

 

5.4.2       Roving Assignments

 

Teachers who are required to move their class to another teacher’s room when that teacher goes off track will receive a stipend of Two Hundred Fifty Dollars ($250) per year.

 

5.5       Multiple Site Assignments

 

A teacher whose assigned duties include teaching at more than one (l) site during the same session shall be provided:

 

5.5.1       Lockable storage space, as needed.

 

5.5.2       Appropriate travel time.

 

5.5.3       Reimbursement for use of personal vehicle at District Governing Board approved mileage rate.

 

5.5.4       Assistance in transporting materials not easily transported by the teachers.

 

5.5.5       It is understood that multiple site assignments be kept to a minimum.

 

5.6       Miscellaneous Working Conditions

 

5.6.1       Year-round education sessions scheduled during hot weather will be conducted only in classrooms that are normally air conditioned.

 

5.6.2       The District shall develop and implement a plan for forwarding pertinent District, site, and session communications to unit members between sessions.

 

5.6.3       Should a unit member’s regular work year extend beyond the contractual work year, that unit member will be compensated at his/her regular rate of pay.

 

Unless otherwise specifically modified by the above, all provisions of Article 2 - Assignment/Reassignment, Article 3 -Transfers and Article 4 - Displaced Teachers are applicable to Year-Round Schools.
