Ed Code limits RSP caseloads to 28; that includes all student to whom you deliver special education instruction.  I need your help to verify the numbers within your case load.  Could you please provide as much information as possible, so that I can work with our attorney to determine your workload?  I need this information from each of you as soon as possible.  The questions are below.  We hope to meet with the District again in the next couple weeks.

We are attempting to address the significant workload and work towards solutions.  I have listened and watched.  I know you need some relief and support in your work.

I appreciate how busy you all are but I need your help to try and get some relief.
We are working this from multiple angles:
  1.  Proposed a SPED stipend based upon extra credentialing and IEP management at bargaining
  2.  Legally challenged the caseload - that is why we need more info.
  3. Working to address the new autism authorization - we would like to get an ongoing stipend for all sped teachers with the authorization
Finally, I need to know that you are ready to stand up for SPED teachers.  I am prepared to stand with you and continue to advocate for you, but I need to know to what extent can we organize and stand together. Your responses to this email either on district email or at dinayc@aol.com will give me some idea of our support for one another.

For secondary SPED
  • How many students on your case load - that is you case manage the IEP?
  • How many students do you deliver special education instruction during the day?
  • How many general education students in your consultant class?
  • Are there students in your caseload that you do not deliever direct instruction? That is you do not see them during any instruction during the day.
  • It would be helpful if you could actually tell me about each period:
    • what are you doing (direct special ed instruction or push-in)?
    • how many sped students that period?
    • how many gen'l ed studnts that period?
For elementary SPED
  • How many students on your case load - that you case manage?
  • How many students do you deliver special education instruction during the day?
    • Generally I expect that at K-5 these numbers are likely the same.
  • Do you deliver direct instruction to genral ed studnets in RtI intervention groups?
    • If so how many students in each group?
  • It would be helpful if you could actually tell me about your daily schedule:
  1. how many minutes of direct instruction?
  2. how many minutes of push-in?
  3. any time built into day for testing and IEP prep?
Please share any other details that you think will be helpful.
I thank you for your time.  Please feel free to call or email with questions or concerns.

Thank you, Dina
